
Dinnington Town overcame one of their sternest tests of the season to secure a crucial 4-1 victory over AFC Bentley, taking another giant step towards their promotion dream with just five massive games now standing in their way.
Facing the only side to have taken points off them this campaign, Dinnington Town knew they would need to be at their best — and after a tense, hard-fought contest, they rose to the occasion in front of a packed Blackout13.com Arena.
With so much at stake, both teams started cautiously, but Dinnington Town slowly began to assert their authority as the first half wore on.
Their patience was rewarded just before the break when talisman Brad Kerr broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute. The all-important opener settled things down and give the home side a deserved lead going into half-time.
Emerging from the interval with renewed intent, Dinnington Town wasted no time in doubling their advantage.
Just three minutes after the restart, Brad Kerr was at it again getting his second of the afternoon and strengthen Dinnington Town’s grip on the contest.
However, AFC Bentley proved exactly why they remain the only team to have taken points off Dinnington Town this season. The visitors hit back in the 60th minute when an unfortunate own goal from Steven Booth handed Bentley a lifeline and brought the game back to 2-1.
What followed was a nervy and tense spell as Dinnington Town dug deep to protect their slender advantage, with AFC Bentley sensing an opportunity to snatch something from the game once again.
But as the clock ticked towards full-time, it was Dinnington Town who found the killer instinct when it mattered most.
In the final minute of normal time, Ash Cooper coolly slotted home to ease the pressure and make it 3-1, sparking scenes of celebration among the home support.
And there was still time for Cam Evans to put the icing on the cake, as he added a fourth goal in stoppage time to seal a vital three points and ensure Dinningto Town’s promotion charge remains firmly on track.
With just five huge games remaining, Dinnington Town now turn their focus to Doncaster City at home, in what promises to be a title decider that could define the entire season for either team. Both teams have promotion ambitions of their own, and victory for either side could prove decisive.
